Conditions of Entry 2013:

the open west is an annual open competition and exhibition inviting work from national and international artists practising contemporary and conceptual art. Work submitted can include painting, installation, film and sound, textile, photography, ceramics, drawing and print, performance, sculpture, glass, metal and plastics. Continuing an exploration of fine art forms, the selection of work for 2013 will also examine the skills of the contemporary maker and include experimental and digital technologies together with traditional processes. There are no geographical restrictions. Artists must be over 21. Work should be recent. Size limitations are according to available space.

Up to 40 artists will be included in the exhibition, each with the possibility of showing more than one work at each venue.


selection the 2013 exhibition will be selected by Lyn Cluer Coleman and Sarah Goodwin, Dr Justin Marshall and Emma Critchley. Selection will be from a maximum of six works. All artists selected for the exhibition will be invited to the Private Views on Friday 5 July (Newark Park) and Friday 11 October (Cheltenham)


the open west 2013 offers an opportunity for artists to participate in an education programme; an internship; two artists’ residencies; a workshop, a day of artists in conversation. An artists’ catalogue is published each year


4 award winners will each receive £500 (announced at each Private View)


reproduction of images if selected for the exhibition, the artist agrees to the reproduction (at no fee) of their work in association with the exhibition (included in the publicity, press, website and publications of the open west, the National Trust, Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum and the University of Gloucestershire)

application fee £32.00 for first two images, additional images £5 each (maximum 6 images). Fee payable by bank transfer, cheque, postal order or PayPal:

deadline for entries Tuesday 2 April 2013. Artists whose work is selected for exhibition will be notified by Friday 19 April 2013

insurance Although every care will be taken of submitted application material, responsibility for loss and damage cannot be accepted. If shortlisted for the exhibition the artist is responsible for the costs of transportation of the work to and from the specified venue. The organisers will not be responsible for any loss or damage either in transit to and from the exhibition, or during any period of storage, packing or unpacking, or in any period in which the work may be at the exhibition venue.


It is strongly advised that each artist takes out their own commercial insurance to cover their work in transit, in storage and at the exhibition

collection exhibitors will be expected to collect their work promptly at the end of the exhibition, on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November 2013 (or by arrangement with the curators)

sale of works commission on sales will be 30% (to be included in sale price if appropriate)
